The Otter Lutra lutra can be found by lakes and rivers with plenty of vegetation for cover. They also inhabit coastal areas where freshwater streams are nearby. Otters have a dense, thick coat, small ears, a strong tapered tail and webbed feet making them streamlined and excellent swimmers. They eat a diet of fish, eels, crustaceans, frogs and occasionally waterside birds. They raise their young ‘kits’ in ‘holts’ hidden in riverside vegetation and spend as much time above water as they do below.
