The Giant’s Causeway in County Antrim was formed by massive volcanic eruptions when lava and ash were spewed into the surrounding area. This cooled and cracked into the mainly hexagonal basaltic columns that are the hallmark of the Giant’s Causeway. Myth tells of an Irish giant Fionn mac Cumhaill, who battled the Scottish giant, Benandonner, by hurling great chunks of his country into the sea, forming the Causeway.
