River Water-crowfoot Ranunculus fluitans is an aquatic perennial of swift-flowing streams and rivers. It requires a stony substrate and fairly shallow, clean swift-flowing fresh water. A member of the buttercup family, its open white flowers with yellow centres are borne on short stems above the surface. The submerged slender, tassel-like leaves form large clumps which create important shade and cover for fish and invertebrates. Britain has more than 20% of the world’s population of this plant.
