Despite a severe decline in the 20th century the Comma butterfly Polygonia c-album has made a remarkable recovery in its population and is now widespread thoughout southern Britain and extending its range northwards. Its preferred habitat is the woodland edge where the caterpillars feed on bramble, nettles, elm and willow. Both the caterpillar and adult are highly camouflaged and when its ragged-edged wings are closed the butterfly resembles a withered leaf.
