The mandibles of the male stag beetle Lucanus cervus can be as long as their body and are used for combat with other males over territory and mating rights. They are also used to dig burrows in rotting wood, which is the preferred habitat for the beetle. In the UK, stag beetles are a protected species and can be found in woodland areas in southern and southeastern England.
