The Pine marten Martes martes is the second largest native mammalian predator in the UK and until the 18th century was quite common. With characteristic creamy bib, long legs and bushy tail they are agile climbers, preferring a habitat of broad-leaved woodland. Mainly nocturnal and solitary for most of the year eating diet of small mammals, birds, invertebrates, carrion and amphibians, martens need large areas of connected woodland to survive.pe
