Ben Loyal, 764m high, is one of the most distinctive mountains in northern Scotland, rising east of Tongue in Sutherland. Though lower than many Highland peaks, its isolated position and jagged Cambrian quartzite pinnacles make it appear far larger. Formed from ancient quartzite around 500 million years ago, the mountain was later shaped by glaciers. Its dramatic summit towers, including An Caisteal, Sgòr Chaonasaid and Beinn Bheag, create one of the Highlands’ most recognisable skylines. Nearby Lochan Hakel is surrounded by blanket bog and heather moor, supporting habitat for red deer, golden plover and hen harriers.
Barbara took up hill walking in her late twenties and capturing scenery on film seemed a natural progression so that pretty soon she was getting work published. Self taught, and working alone, Barbara seeks fleeting light and wild weather in her work.
