The winter decay of the White Water-lily Nymphaea alba is trapped in ice, while seasonal dormancy allows these hardy aquatic plants to survive cold Highland winters. The leaves themselves are dying back for winter, but the lilies survive the cold through their submerged rhizomes anchored in the mud below the frozen surface. Coulin area near Glen Torridon.
