Stowe’s Hill, rising to 381m on Bodmin Moor’s eastern edge, is known for the Cheesewring, a striking stack of weathered granite slabs. Historically, the summit contained a large Bronze Age prehistoric hill enclosure with stone ramparts, hut platforms and cairns. The surrounding area later became heavily industrialised during Cornwall’s mining boom, with granite from Cheesewring Quarry exported for major Victorian engineering projects, including Tower Bridge and Westminster Bridge. Concerns that blasting might damage the Cheesewring formations led to public protests and quarrying restrictions in the 1860s.
