These Giant sequoia or Giant redwoods Sequoiadendron giganteum, sometimes called ‘Wellingtonias’, were originally introduced from California in the 1850s during the Victorian era. They have been found to grow well in the mild damp climate and deep soils of Britain. In 1952, the woodland (pictured) was purchased by Mary Wellesley the great-great-granddaughter of the Duke of Wellington, who rescued the woodland from neglect. It was subsequently donated to the Royal Forestry Society in 1986, who continue to own and manage this thriving forest.
