Cwm Idwal in Eryri North Wales is a fine example of a glaciated mountain cwm. Carved by ice during the last glaciation, the bowl-shaped hollow contains the shallow pool Llyn Idwal, beneath steep mountain walls and shattered cliffs. Charles Darwin made a historic visit here in 1842. Inspired by the landforms around Cwm Idwal, he helped develop theories about Ice Age glaciation in Britain. Notable among its vertiginous surrounding cliffs are hardy club mosses, lichens and rare arctic alpine plants adapted to thin soils and winter snows.
Landscape photography is my focus (sic) since retiring from a university career researching and teaching plant and environmental science. Photography combines my lifelong love of Britain's wild places with an understanding (I hope!) of how our diverse environments work and the processes within them, as well as the way light falls on them. Seeing - really seeing - what is around us is hard, and the challenge for me is to find formalist images whose structure and atmosphere are consonant with the nature of the subject.
