Ammonite fossils are extinct, shelled cephalopods, related to modern squid and octopus, identified by their single-plane coil shape with distinct chambers, and intricate ‘suture lines’. They thrived in the Mesozoic era, showing varied surface ornamentation like ribs, nodes, or spines. Ammonite fossils can be found along the Jurassic Coast of southern Dorset, and occasionally amongst beach deposits at Robin Hood’s Bay in North Yorkshire
