The Razorbill Alca torda is a striking black-and-white seabird of the auk family, breeding in dense colonies on steep sea cliffs, rocky islands and offshore stacks around the coasts of the North Atlantic. Razorbills nest closely together on narrow cliff ledges, relying on safety in numbers to reduce predation from gulls and skuas. Threats to razorbills include climate change, declining fish stocks, marine pollution and oil spills. Warming seas can reduce the availability of sand eels, their most important prey, leading to poor breeding success. Severe storms and avian influenza outbreaks have also affected some seabird colonies in recent years.
