The Common Whitethroat Sylvia communis is a summer visitor to the UK, migrating from sub-Saharan Africa to breed. Males typically arrive about ten days before females, taking advantage of nectar from early-flowering shrubs such as blackthorn and establishing territories ahead of their arrival. They build nests from twigs and roots, after which females select a suitable one. Whitethroats tend to avoid dense, mature forests and mountainous areas, instead favouring thick hedgerows, bramble patches, and scrub-rich coastal habitats.
