The Raven Corvus corax is a bird of mountains, moorland and sea cliffs and is a widely distributed resident in the Highlands, Southern Uplands, the west coast of Scotland, the Outer and Inner Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland. Ravens begin nesting in February, but by March and April they are heavily focused on incubating their clutches of three to seven eggs, followed by incessant feeding of the growing chicks. Nestlings are fed a variety of foods by both parents, including carrion, insects, small mammals and eggs. Once fledged the young will remain with the adults for several months.
