Photo of the Week

European goldfinches Carduelis carduelis feeding on the last remaining seeds stranded in the dry bracts of Lesser burdock Arctium minus. Goldfinches are seed-eating specialists with thin sharp-tipped beaks perfectly adapted to access food most birds cannot reach. The Goldfinch’s twittering song is distinctive and highly appealing. However, its song was also one of the reasons the Goldfinch had previously declined, with widespread trapping taking place for the caged bird industry. Thankfully this practice has long been illegal.
