Ermine stoat Mustela erminea is a small mustelid, related to the weasel and pine marten. They are fierce hunters of grasslands, heath and woodlands. Ermines feed on small mammals, birds, eggs, frogs and occasional invertebrates. Depending on local snow fall frequency in winter months, a small percentage of stoats turn white and blend with the landscape. This is known as being in ermine. Their brown colour returns in the early Spring.
