The Atlantic grey seal Halichoerus grypus is one of the two seal species found in the North Atlantic Ocean, with large populations around the coasts of the United Kingdom. The breeding season for Atlantic grey seals typically occurs between September and November when female grey seals come ashore to give birth on beaches, rocky outcrops, or isolated islands. After the young pups have rapidly gained weight suckling rich, fatty milk, the pup undergoes a molting process shedding its white lanugo fur with a shorter waterproof coat, better suited for life at sea.
