Linnets Linaria cannabina form big flocks during the winter months, sometimes mixing with other finches feeding on stubbles, wasteland and saltmarshes and even derelict industrial land. Linnet numbers fell sharply in the late 1900s and though slower now, is still on a downward trajectory. This negative trend is thought to be linked to increased nest failure associated with agricultural intensification.
