Photo of the Week

Crack willow Salix fragilis in the Strumpshaw marshes., Norfolk. Chlorophyll, which is responsible for the green colour of leaves, breaks down as daylight and temperatures decrease, revealing other pigments. Carotenoids, which are always present in leaves, give them yellow and orange hues. Anthocyanins, produced from trapped sugars, contribute to red and purple colors.
