The Water vole Arvicola amphibious is found along our waterways and is similar-looking to the brown rat, but with a blunt nose, small ears and furry tail. This vole lives along rivers, streams and ditches, around ponds and lakes, and in marshes, and areas of wet moorland. Water voles are under serious threat from habitat loss and predation by the American mink. The water vole is now protected in the UK under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981. Priority Species under the UK Post-2010 Biodiversity Framework and is listed as endangered on both the Great Britain and the England Red List for Mammals.
