Photo of the Week

At close quarters, the apparently dark-looking Starling Sturnus vulgaris is a very colourful bird; its breeding plumage is iridescent green, blue and purple and it is spotted with silver in the winter. Starlings mainly feed on soil invertebrates, although will commonly visit garden feeders. Numbers increase dramatically during the winter months when birds arrive from northern Europe and larger roosts can number over a million birds. Roosts are often made more visible by the clouds of individuals murmerating in close proximity to the roost, on arrival at sunset.
