The Little Owl Athene noctua is Britain’s smallest owl. The Little Owl was introduced to Britain in 1842. It is an unusual example of an introduced species which has neither died out, nor has it multiplied out of control. The Little Owl is now widespread despite historic control by gamekeepers who accused it of living entirely on game stocks. However, one of the earliest studies showed that the bulk of its diet was earthworms, insects, and small mammals, including some that are serious pests to the farmer. The Little owl is now protected like all our native owls.
