The Barn owl Tyto alba faces many challenges during wintertime. Small mammals like field voles and mice, which are their primary food source, become less active in the cold, making them harder to find and catch. Consequently they can often be seen hunting in daylight hours. Farming methods in the 20th Century led to the destruction of hedgerows and rough meadows and old farm buildings were either demolished or converted to other uses, causing the barn owl population to decrease to dangerously
low levels.
