Mandarin ducks Aix galericulata frequent river valleys and small water bodies with well-vegetated margins. Although a native of Asia, they have become naturalized in the UK in the 20th century where a strong feral population is now found across England and parts of Scotland and Wales. Wild mandarin ducks usually nest in cavities in trees, lining the hollow with down. Mandarins are mostly found in pairs or singly, but will gather in larger flocks as the winter population increases.
