Adults of the Common toad Bufo bufo emerge from their overwintering sites in early spring and start migrating towards a pond or body of water on mild, damp evenings, usually tending to return to ancestral breeding ponds along the same routes each year. En route males wait near to the pond and ‘piggy back’ on females, (known as amplexus) as they make their way. This most charismatic amphibian is threatened as a species by loss of breeding ponds and disruption of migration routes that involve crossing highways.
