Photo of the Week

Honey bees Apis mellifera swarming on Common Hawthorn sapling. Swarming occurs when the current hive becomes overcrowded or congested, prompting the colony to seek a new home. The urge to swarm is triggered by the old or declining queen and a significant number of workers leaving the hive. They will form a cluster in a temporary location while scout bees search for a suitable new nest site where a younger more productive queen may be found.
