Durdle Door in Dorset is probably one of the most famous sea cliff arches in the world and seen here with a rare dusting of wintry raiment. It was created when the sea pierced through the Portland limestone around 10,000 years ago. The deeply indented coast has been eroded for several millennia by differential wave action to the softer Wealden clays and sandstones leaving the harder limestone as prominences. The area is known as the Jurassic Coast, and is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
