Cadair Idris 893m is by no means the highest of the mountains of Eryri ‘Snowdonia’, but its prepossessing shape dominates the landscape to the south of Dolgellau. Cadair Idris, or ‘The Chair of Idris’ takes its name from a legendary warrior poet. Penygadair, the highest peak in the range, reflects in the still waters of Llyn y Gadair. Welsh legends suggest that those who sleep on the mountain will awaken either as a madman, a poet or indeed never wake again.
