The Norfolk mussel flat boat has no keel and can float in only inches of water. It was perfectly designed to glide along shallow tidal creeks of the salt marsh harvesting its resident mussels. The flats could be punted or sculled with the help of the tide, a simple and cost effective way to work. To make greater use of them, the mussel flat was also used for foraging samphire, sea purslane, cockles and sea aster.
