The Pine Marten Martes martes lives mostly in ancient woodland, preferring pine forest, though they will also live in scrub, rocky areas and crags. In Britain they are mostly restricted to northern and central Scotland, with low numbers in northern England and Wales where reintroduction schemes are becoming successful. Pine martens live alone, only coming together to breed in summer. They breed above ground, and create their dens in natural tree cavities or holes created by other creatures, such as squirrel dreys and birds nests. Pictured here is an adult female with a six-month-old kit.
