Afon Rheidol runs through a deep gorge in the Cambrian Mountains in Ceredigion. Its precipitous slopes are forested mostly with old oaks and occasional silver birch. The flow is broken up with huge boulders creating many small rapids in the river. It is a moss and fern-covered temperate rainforest landscape, which attracts many birds, including dippers, wagtails, redstarts and flycatchers, being particularly rich in insect life for them to feed on.
Paul Wakefield mostly specialises in landscapes. He produced several books in the 1980’s, with Jan Morris and with various writers. His latest book of landscapes, The Landscape, was published in 2014 with essays by Robert Macfarlane and Andrew Wilton.
