A hidden woodland pool in Nidderdale, Yorkshire. Freshwater ponds and pools rarely freeze entirely and when covered in surface ice can actually increase their oxygen content dramatically. Oxygen diffuses extremely slowly through still water, around 2mm per day, and a covering of ice prevents it from escaping. Aquatic plants continue to photosynthesise and so the oxygen level increases, benefiting the plants and creatures that survive the cold winter beneath the surface.
