Hedgehogs Erinaceus europaeus are in serious decline due to loss and damage of suitable habitat, such as hedgerows and woodland, depriving the species of both food and shelter. The use of pesticides on farmland and in gardens may also have reduced the hedgehog’s food supply. As well as the obvious danger of road traffic in urban areas, the use of impermeable fencing around property also prevents hedgehogs from travelling through an area in search of food.
