The Goldfinch Carduelis carduelis is a strikingly colourful member of the finch family, common in woods, heaths and parkland throughout Britain. They are commonly seen feeding on small plumed seeds from plants such as ragwort, thistle, dandelion and teasel, which they extract with their specially adapted pointed beaks. The collective name for goldfinches is a ‘charm’, which refers to the blended tinkling sounds made by a small flock.
