Photo of the Week

Lathkill Dale in the Derbyshire Peak District is a deep wooded valley formed by the erosive forces of postglacial rivers 15,000 years ago. Many of the trees that line its banks are ash Fraxinus excelsior. The main threat to ash trees is ash ‘dieback’ and many are affected in this valley. This is a disease caused by a fungus called Hymenoscyphus fraxineus. An eradication and replacement programme has been implemented in the dale with a resistant strain of ash, rowan and hazel.
