The rarely seen but widespread European Otter Lutra lutra, is an elusive mammal of rivers, lakes and coastal habitats. The otter is an excellent swimmer feeding on fish, crustaceans and water birds. On the west coast of Scotland otters are sometimes visible in small harbours, and rocky seaweed covered shores. More commonly tell-tale five toed footprints, 6-7cm long, can be found in soft mud or sand.
