The Assynt area of the north-west Highlands has a wide range of pristine wilderness habitats, from rocky and sandy shores to high mountains, with pockets of ancient oak woodland, upland heath and dwarf juniper scrubland. Freshwater lochs and rivers are interspersed by upstanding mountains like Suilven 731m (pictured), Canisp and Cul Mor, and Quinag which host birds and animals such as red deer, golden eagles, ptarmigan, mountain hares, and otters.
Based in Bristol, Alex Nail has a passion for mountains and wilderness areas. His photography is largely illustrative, showing magical lighting conditions and spectacular scenery. His latest book Northwest of the Highlands of Scotland, showcases wild mountain vistas and dramatic light displays.
