The Eurasian widgeon Mareca penelope is a gregarious bird of open wetlands, such as wet grassland or marshes with some taller vegetation, and usually feeds by dabbling for plant food or grazing. Small numbers breed in central and northern Scotland and northern England, but great numbers of widgeon arrive to overwinter in Britain from Iceland, Scandinavia and Russia.
