Photo of the Week

The Jelly Ear fungus Auricular auricula judae grows commonly on elder branches throughout the year. The tan-coloured, gelatinous ‘ears’ have greyish downy hairs. Its latin name is thought to be a corruption of ‘Judas’s ear’ derived from the belief that Judas Iscariot hung himself from an elder tree. The fungus is edible and should be gathered while still soft.
