In times of prolonged rainfall, natural overflow of rivers and a temporary rise in the water table is frequent in the Washburn Valley in Yorkshire. This ancient moorland, woodland and heath landscape is catchment to a wide area of land between Wharfedale and Nidderdale and as such was selected in the early 19th century for the construction of three large reservoirs to supply water for city of Leeds.
