Spring Birch trees Betula pendula in Riccal Dale, near Carlton in North Yorkshire. The birch has both male and female catkins (flowers) on the same tree. As these mature through the following months, seeds are borne away by the wind in autumn. Silver birch can grow to a height of 30m providing a light canopy which is ideal for woodland flower growth of wood anemones, sorrel and bluebells.
