The Velvet Shank or ‘Winter mushroom’ Flammulina velutipes is often seen fruiting throughout light snowfall and is even known to continue growth after it has thawed from freezing. Its fruiting season extends from October to April. This saprotrophic species grows in dense clusters or tufts on hardwood trees and stumps.
