Hoar frost has formed on Common Hair Cap Moss or Polytrichum. These long stemmed non-woody mosses may form cushions made up of underlying old dead tissue. Also growing in this clump are Cladoniaceae moss-like cup lichens, a main food source for reindeer in northern Europe (including the small semi feral herds at Glenmore on Cairngorm).
